This painting shows a mother surrounded by her two children. The enfolding arm is actually made from fabric as well as the hearts and big bold leaves. My mother sewed all of our clothes. I remember trying on dresses, shirts, and pants that were only partially completed, and with several pins pursed between her lips for safe keeping, she would add a pin here, change a pin here, measure carefully, make a tuck there, and then back to the sewing machine. The finished product would be worn for everyday around the farm, to school, and to church. Everywhere we went, we were CLOTHED with a reminder that Mom loved us.
When I work with fabric in mixed media art like this, it reminds me of my sweet mom and her hours of love poured into me as well as for each of my 9 siblings. She’s been gone for over 20 years now, but as I painted this piece, I thought of her.
