Evening light is splashing in golden colors over the Savannah. A young boy is out herding some goats. In the distance a baby elephant is safe next to it’s mother. One can hear the sound of buzzing insects, their wings flashing in the sun.
Through Compassion International, our family is in correspondence with 7 children on the continent of Africa, with two being in Rwanda. This painting was inspired by the reality and joy of such children and teenagers. I wanted to focus in on one part of Africa and chose Rwanda. We support a 10 year old boy there, who also happens to have a twin brother. His name is Reymond, and this child’s clothing was taken from the picture we have of him on our fridge.
Rwanda is covered with diverse ecosystems – and even includes mountain rainforests and wetlands, but it also includes the Savannah. I did a little research on flowers and insects of Rwanda and tried to adequately paint those in the foreground with flowers that might mimic those seen there.
Savannah Sunset – done in acrylic paints, inks, and collage, is a beautiful treasure to add to your home.
